Publishing and perishing: Critical importance of education design research

double blind experiments are impossible in education
goals, intentions & beliefs of teachers affect students
basically classical 'scientific' approach to ed research doesn't work!

Lots of research but practice hasn't improved?! Research must be usable and relevant! Rigour is not enough!

Educational design research, Akker et al.

Phase 1
Problem
Practitioners
Lit review

Phase 2
Intervention or solution
Find principles/other's advice on how to tackle similar problem
Compile draft design principles
Design and develop solution - meaningful, relevant, scaffolding, etc

Phase 3
Cycle of testing
Data collection & analysis - what worked & didn't work

Phase 4
Design principles - to share & help others to do the same thing
reflect on findings
create heuristics
publish
